Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement: The Orange Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls gate motor replacements throughout Orange, with most swaps running between $480 and $850 installed depending on your model and what failed. Most owners call us after the gate starts refusing to close all the way, or when the motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we’re trained on their full lineup and carry OEM and quality aftermarket parts for their swing and slide operators. Call (707) 754-0878 and we’ll have a tech out to diagnose it, usually the same day.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

We service the full Ghost Controls line across Orange: the AXDP and AXD single and dual swing-arm operators, the R Series slide gate motors (R3, R5, R7), and the TSS1 solar-powered swing unit that’s common on ranch properties in the hills above Orange Park Acres. Ghost Controls changed their control board pin layout between the pre-2020 and post-2020 production runs, so a motor arm from the older AXDP series will not reliably communicate with a newer board and vice versa. That is the single most common compatibility mismatch we correct on service calls. If you’re unsure which generation you have, look at the label on the underside of the motor housing: serial numbers starting with “GC19” or earlier are the older series.

For most swing gates under 16 feet and 650 pounds, the OEM arm is the safest match. For heavier gates in the 650 to 900 pound range, we often recommend a quality aftermarket linear actuator rated above the gate weight; Ghost’s own arms can struggle on older ornamental iron gates that have picked up moisture weight over the years. We keep both options on the truck in Orange.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Gate Motor Is Failing

  • Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. The capacitor or the gear drive is failing. This is the most common failure we see in Orange, especially on gates that cycle more than 20 times a day.
  • Gate opens but reverses before fully closing. The force setting has drifted, or the obstruction sensor is reading resistance from a dragging hinge. Often it’s the motor’s feedback circuit wearing out.
  • Alarm beeps with no movement. Ghost Controls boards throw a continuous beep when the board detects a voltage drop or a limit switch fault. The motor arm may still be fine, but the board is flagging the arm’s internal limit relay.
  • Gate runs slow, then stops entirely. The drive gear inside the arm is binding. In Orange’s dry summers, the original grease cooks off and the gears score themselves.
  • Visible rust or moisture inside the motor housing. Orange’s coastal-influenced morning fog works its way into the housing seals, especially on gates within a few miles of the Santa Ana River channel. Once moisture reaches the motor brushes, the arm fails in a matter of weeks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Orange, a Ghost Controls swing arm replacement typically runs $480 to $650 installed, including the new arm or gear assembly, mounting hardware, and re-setting the travel limits and force profiles. Slide motor replacements (R Series) run $550 to $850 because the gear rack and chain tension have to be re-timed to the new motor. If the control board failed along with the arm, add $150 to $250 for the board and reprogramming. We quote the full price up front, before any work starts, and the number we quote is the number you pay.

Every Ghost Controls motor replacement we install in Orange carries our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the gate doesn’t operate correctly within 90 days of the repair, we come back and make it right, no arguing and no additional charge. That’s the Keystone Standard on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things an owner can safely check before calling: confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, check that the manual release lever is fully re-engaged, and clear any debris from the gate track. Past that, we recommend stopping. Ghost Controls arms run on 24-volt DC, which is safe to handle, but the gate itself is a moving steel object weighing several hundred pounds. A mis-adjusted limit switch or an incorrectly tensioned chain can send a slide gate off its track and into a car or a person.

Victor Salinas has repaired Ghost Controls operators in Orange for years, and he will tell you the same thing he tells every customer in Friendly Hills and Old Towne: a gate should open when you need it to and stay closed when you don’t. Everything else is just details. If your Ghost Controls motor is failing, call (707) 754-0878 and we’ll get it sorted.
