Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s slide-gate lineup – the most common models we see in Orange are the SL and SLX series, along with their older SLR and SLD predecessors – all ride on a pair of steel rollers bolted to the gate’s bottom rail. The hinge side tells a different story: most Linear swing gates use a two-hinge configuration with a fixed top pin and an adjustable bottom hinge, and the OD of that pin is where compatibility gets tricky. Early SL-series gates used a 3/4-inch hinge pin; later SLX frames moved to 7/8-inch pins with a greaseable bushing. An aftermarket hinge with the wrong pin diameter will seem to fit during mock-up and then bind under load, which is exactly the kind of failure we have unwound more times than we care to count.

OEM Linear hinge and roller assemblies are well made, but they are not the only game in town. For most SL and SLX gates we are comfortable installing a heavy-gauge aftermarket hinge with a sealed bearing, provided the pin diameter and bracket offset match the original. On older SLR gates we lean OEM, because the bracket hole spacing changed between production years and aftermarket kits occasionally drop a bolt hole. If you can read the model tag on the opener chassis, we can usually match the gate hardware from that alone. If the tag is gone, we take two measurements – roller diameter and hinge pin diameter – and match from there. Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

• The gate sags at the latch end. A worn hinge pin lets the top of the gate lean away from the post, dropping the free corner an inch or more. You will see fresh scrape marks in the driveway where the gate used to clear it.
• The opener hums but the gate barely moves. Flat-spotted rollers or seized bearings increase the rolling resistance past what the Linear opener’s limit settings can push through. The motor works harder, the gate moves slower, and the board eventually faults out.
• The gate visibly jumps or shudders mid-travel. A roller with a chunk missing from the wheel delivers a rhythmic thump every rotation. It reads like a motor problem on the surface, but the motion is steady – the wheel is not.
• Metal-on-metal grinding you can hear from the house. When the roller bearing has eaten itself, the wheel stops spinning and acts like a sled. The sound is harsh and the roller face is usually scored flat on one side.
• The gate rests against the stop post with a new gap at the hinge side. The bottom hinge bracket has pulled loose or the pin has ovaled out its hole. The gate is hanging off a weakened point, and every cycle works that hole bigger.

There are safe checks you can do on your own. Watch the gate travel from the side, see where it labors, listen for the thump. If the roller is simply wobbling because the axle nut backed off, tightening it is reasonable. What we would not advise is pulling a hinge pin on a gate that is already sagging – that gate is under constant gravity load, and once the pin clears, the weight has to go somewhere.
